No need to over-think this any more than our dads would have. I spread some Scott's Turf Builder (No herbicide or insecticide) in the Spring (the first time the grass needs mowing) and Scott's Winterguard (No herbicide or pesticide) in the Fall, after the leaves are picked up. Seriously, skip all of the weed and bug killers. Clover is good for your lawn, grass seed used to contain a percentage of clover seed. Earthworms are your friend. I just dig out any big weeds by hand; a half-hour after dinner on a nice summer night and they're all gone. Bare spots get a little dirt and grass seed to fill in. Mow your grass tall, 3", and use a mower/blade that recycles the clippings to the lawn. After a dry spell the lawn goes off green, but that is dormant, not dead. I take care of my lawn but don't let it run my life.
