Check your local library to see if they have an Ancestry library account. Mine does so that I can use Ancestry for free but only when I am physically at the library.
I used a much older version of the Roots Magic genealogy software which is very reasonably priced and I was very happy with it so I would recommend it but I do not know how it compares to other genealogy software packages. You can download a free limited version. I did not want to do a lot of work on Ancestry that could be lost of limited when I canceled my Ancestry subscription.
With both Family Search and Ancestry be very skeptical about the family tree connections you see when there are not documents to back them up. Lots of them are wrong.
