Will they allow me to transfer our brokerage account to a trust account in kind, so as to avoid a taxable event? Will I be able to title the account “John Doe and Jane Doe Revocable Trust dated 10/27/24.”?
Yes, for us, it was a non-taxable event.
Yes, on a name change.

We converted our non-retirement Vanguard joint brokerage into a Vanguard brokerage trust account this summer.

You need the Vanguard Brokerage Account Application Kit for Trusts pdf. I called to request this. They sent it through their secure message system. This should cover most of the options you might need.

We used the following sections.
  • Change of Ownership Between Vanguard Nonretirement Accounts
  • Vanguard Brokerage Account Application for Trusts
We form-filled the pdf, printed it out, signed in a few places, and mailed it in. In about 2 weeks, our original Vanguard brokerage account was closed out and a new one was created in the name of our trust.

Both account owners need to sign the appropriate documents. No signature guarantee is required if the owners of the original Vanguard brokerage account match the owners of the new Vanguard trust account.

Please be aware - these are not forms you are likely to fill-out often. Lots to read through with many options (however, you will likely not need many of the options), but they offer clear explanations. If you read through the descriptions carefully, it is a straightforward process.

We had no issues with the conversion our non-retirement Vanguard joint brokerage account to a Vanguard trust account.
