That's fair to say.You are asking the wrong question and too many of the answers gave you terrible advice... Your benchmark should not be the S&P 500 - it is unlikely that that is the appropriate asset allocation for your portfolio.
I don't know what the right benchmark is for you, but the fact that you are comparing performance to one that comes at more risk than you likely should be taking (and my hunch is won't notice the overperformance when that risk shows up) is a decent indicator that some form of professional management is warranted - whether what you have now is the right manager I can't really say.
A close friend of mine laughs when I talk about this topic and says "You're NOT paying them to beat the S&P."
But then I wonder "Why am I NOT paying someone to beat the S&P??" so to speak....
