Another Twin Cities Boglehead here.
We did a number of driving trips with our kids starting about the time that they were 8-10. We did a number of summer trips over the years, heading primarily west until both kids were in their teens, then east to more historic sites.
Black Hills, Devils Tower, Jewel Cave and the Mammoth Site and then south to Rocky Mountain National Park was one of our first trips. Later trips were a bit longer heading primarily to Yellowstone/Grand Tetons on one trip, then a more southern trip to Colorado Springs/Royal Gorge/Pikes Peak, and then a trip to the Utah parks (Bryce Canyon, Arches, Zion, Canyonlands). Glacier and Banff were the longest trips west - routing ourselves through Theodore Roosevelt National Park on the way. These were all driving trips.
