It's not easy to find, but it's there.Nowhere do I see that your checking account has to be active to keep preferred rewards status...

I can't link directly to it, but see the question "What happens if my program balance drops after I enroll in Preferred Rewards and I go into a grace status ?"
While it doesn't say anything about activity in this paragraph, if it is inactive, the checking account will be closed by BofA. I haven't found anything in writing about what they consider to be inactive. What they told me on the phone when I inquired was a lie, though. If as a result of the annual review your balance is below the lowest tier requirement, or you no longer have an eligible checking account, and you don’t sufficiently restore your balances or open an eligible checking account in the three months after your anniversary month, your Preferred Rewards membership will end at that time and your benefits may be discontinued without further notice.
