I found both worked best. Use a family member's address for the legal/residential address (whatever your broker calls it) and use the mailing service for the mailing address. Actually, having a name on a utility bill is great if the broker ever questions your residence, as they will ask for that. I've had my accounts frozen for being an expat before and that was what they asked for.
You also generally need a way to get SMS messages overseas unless your institutions all use some kind of app you can generate it from or will send it by email (less secure).
