The price would drop even if there were no trades
I'm not sure how a stock that has no trades has a market price. For most stocks there is trading every day, some people buying and others selling. For those offering to buy, it is only logical that they would offer less for a company that has just paid out a dividend. And it makes sense that sellers will accept less because they've just received a dividend.
