In many ways we are living in a 1984 society -- at least half anyway.
What Orwell didn't anticipate is that we'd all happily sign away our privacy to the phones in our pockets, for convenience in shopping.
I'd adjust that slightly. Many happily signed away their privacy to social media and tech giants in exchange for better targeted content and advertizing, which seemed like improved service.

In the 2020s our phones are (or can be) on our side, holding a boundary where some of our data is not shared off device, and other data is shared off device. You just need to think about it and set up your phone the way you want. Which, sadly, many people don't do.
