Probate is mentioned a lot in the "How do I know if I need a Trust?" thread.
It sounds like avoiding probate matters more in some states than others.
It sounds like avoiding probate is a way to get money to heirs faster.
It sounds like probate is both the part of "proving" a will and also all of the post-paperwork that can take 6 months to a year, and maybe more.
I did a search here but did not come up with a thread on this topic - specifically what is probate and why is there so much pressure to "avoid" it?
(For my late mother-in-law, probate was just waiting for the various time periods to pass. There weren't a lot of fees or taxes but she didn't have significant $$$ and didn't own a house at that time.)
It seems like learning more about probate from people here who have gone through it (or not, because of having a trust in place) would be much more useful and dependable than random Google searching! Thank you for sharing what you may have learned along the way about probate!
