Do you recommend putting underlayment under engineered hardwood?

We’re in the planning stage of replacing our 1400 sq foot second floor carpet with engineered wood. The contractor’s proposal is to staple down the floor. He didn’t think underlayment was needed but for $1000 bucks more, he will install underlayment mainly for soundproofing. He says underlayment is more critical if floating installation is done, but since stapling will be used, it’s not as important.

Does this make sense. Sorry, I know nothing about floors.
Every flooring I have ever installed lists out in detail what kind of surface prep, underlayment, etc. is required for a good installation. I always follow those installation instructions to the letter. Then if something goes wrong in the future, you may have grounds for a warranty claim. If you don't follow them, you will be out of luck as you voided any warranty. So my advice would be to pick your flooring and then read the installation instructions for underlayment preparation and follow it.
