I´ve been through the same, largely out of cluelessness, and would very much want to caution you. If you put a higher MERV filter infront of your blower, the blower may need to work harder and even struggle to get the air its supposed to move through. In case of my "middle of the road" type of furnace that meant it starts jumping around like a dryer trying to sping bedlinen. Eventually things get loose and break and get costly.
So, your furnace was probably designed with a certain filter resistance in mind. Find out what that is and use it. Nothing else. If you are like me and really want a higher MERV filter at all cost, you can hire a HVAC tech of your choice and have them install a bigger filter box. I had mine upgraded from 16x25x1 to 20x25x4 and I can put any MERV I want and they last forever. That was a $700 act however.
Dont just put high MERV filters onto your blower. If it gets noisy, that´s probably a warning sign.
