A while ago I asked my dad why they began SS when they did. He said he'd done the breakeven math, and figured he'd never reach 84 or so to break even.
The way I look at it, if I live a long time, I will be glad I waited and if I die early, I won't care. Breakeven doesn't even count.
The survivor benefit can tip the scales, but my reason for delaying benefits is to decrease the cost of Roth conversions
There are a lot of good reasons to delay, but unless someone is sure to have a short life or absolutely needs the money, few reasons to claim early.
