Why do you want overdraft "protection"? I always viewed that as a bug, not a feature. If my checking account has $0 and it's hit with a fraudulent check or transfer, I don't want it to pull from another account

I keep my checking account empty for a reason

I half agree, and haven’t bounced a check in literally decades (other than a Fidelity CMA screwup, but that’s a story for another day). But, with more and more of our bills in autopay mode, I worry that I will forget about one and wind up bouncing a payment. As it is, I put large expected payments in my calendar and keep a larger balance in checking than I need. The “wasted” balance is rough when it could be earning 5%.
