There are no easy answers to this honestly. My mother's best friend who was about 20 years older than my mother, outlived her two children and her husband. She was pretty much the end of her line and she relied on my mother towards the end to manage things though she did keep her mind up until the very end. But they had known each other for 30+ years. My mother's friend also did the same for a neighbor of hers when she was younger that was alone at the end and which she knew for many decades. I think the answer will also vary on circumstances and there is no right single answer.
