Personal Consumer Issues • EV value over time

I own a 2021 Chevy Bolt EV, higher trim level. I don't personally look at a car as a store of value, like a retirement account or a home. In a general way, cars are a "wasting asset." I try to keep my (new) cars 8 years.

My car is an example of an "econobox", although the absolute cost (before tax credits or mfr discounts) seems high for what it is. Chevy has tried to abandon the platform, and has changed battery technologies. I say this because many Teslas, for example, are not "econoboxes." But that doesn't make them right for you.

I agree with the general sentiment that the EV idea is still so new, and developing, that you cannot make predictions about the future technologies or holding-value. The fact that you are considering a hybrid (I don't know if you think it's something "new", which it is not) suggests strongly that you have not thought carefully about non-economic issues of a full EV. I mean like charging on the road when going over 100 miles each way, or charging at home if you rent, or if your garage is far from more electricity.

Having two Priuses did help me adjust to having a battery around. But even my cheapo Bolt is a rolling network, with hundreds of sensors reporting back to a computer. In a Prius, at least, the accelerator pedal is more like a radio volume control than like a physical input to my manly four-barrel Foley. I mention that because "gear-head" guys I showed my Prius to were horrified, like fighter-pilots now forced to Fly By Wire on an Airbus jet!
