Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Short Term Capital Gains vs Short Term Capital Gain Distributions

I'm looking at a 1099-Div Consolidated Tax Form from Vanguard. In it they state as part of Box 1a Total Oridinary Dividends there is a very small amount of something called "short term capital gain" - under $1.00.

I looked at this linkviewtopic.php?p=6580435&hilit=vmrxx+sho ... #p6580435 where if I understand correctly there IS a difference between:

- a "short term capital gain" reported on a 1099-Div Consolidated which are reported on the dividend section of schedule B.

AND

- "short term capital gain distributions" which are reported on Schedule D and Form 8949.

My questions are:

1) Did I state the difference correctly above?

2) Exactly what are the differences between Short Term Capital Gains and Short Term Capital Gain Distributions? Is it that Short Term Capital Gains are DIVIDEND ??? Distributions, but Short Term Capital Gain Distributions involve direct profit on a sale?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.
