Using an online inflation calculator, a $3000 product or service today would have cost $1415 30 years ago if it increased at the inflation rate.

I would have paid $600-650 for a molar crown or root canal then. $3000 for both today is about 15% above the inflation-adjusted cost. This seems consistent with there having been an oversupply of dentists in the 1990's, and somewhat of a shortage today, particularly a significant shortage of dental hygienists and dental assistants.
