I have really fond memories of being with my dad as he listened to Bob on the radio (maybe 1986 time frame?)-- He used to talk about the 'land of critical mass' which was the term he used for financial independence
I know his newsletter was called marketetimer but I really don't remember him ever giving much in the way of timing signals, I shared a subscription to his newsletter with some work friends for a few years and pretty much he was a buy & hold guy (IMHO)
for fun I found an old newsletter (September 3 2008) that I had a pretty reasonable looking list of Low cost funds from Vanguard & Schwab with ER <0.5% and only one 'high cost' fund recommendation (RYOCX). He was generally saying 'stay in and dollar cost average new money' at that time (which was a OK strategy as it turned out).
Anyway for what it's worth I don't think he was a Market timer as much as someone who kept people from panicking and encourage them to invest in low cost tax efficient funds (which sounds like a boglehead)
