Not ridiculous. People are too quick with the word "accident." Should one not be scanning the roads far enough ahead, and to both sides, and behind in the mirrors, to anticipate potential problems (including deer)? "What if that guy does XYZ? What should I do in that case?" Anticipate potential contingencies and plan for them. If guy does not do XYZ after all, then all to the good. "awareness and smart reactions and to keep their calm when things go wrong"---of course. But I'd rather they recognize the need for adjustments, and make them, further in advance, well before anything has actually "gone wrong." d = vt.That's ridiculous - unless by 'preventable' you mean you can choose not to drive on public roads (or private ones that don't have adequately high fencing to keep leaping deer out). It is much better to teach them how to have awareness and smart reactions and to keep their calm when things go wrong than to pretend they can foresee every move and prevent every accident.2. There are no "accidents." With adequate foresight, everything is forseeable and preventable. This also seems rather foolish and not all that fair to anyone else on the road (though what they were doing out in blizzards is a good question) and emergency services that may have been needed.6. When I felt they were ready, we'd intentionally go out in blizzards---preferably at night.
Then there is the idea of "space cushion driving," that I still remember from my drivers ed course as a teen. Optimize the space all around you by little adjustments to your speed and position.
I'll concede that "blizzard" may not have been the right word. We intentionally went out in snowstorms, some of them heavy. What's ridiculous is to assume blissfully that a driver will never get caught in a snowstorm. Perhaps unexpectedly. Or perhaps when the child is a bit grown and is now a nurse or paramedic or whatever---one of those people in emergency services who needs to drive to work in the snow. Better they got that experience under my supervision first.
