I see a lot of discussion around freezing credit files and placing alerts on accounts and using 2FA etc. However I believe that thinking is out of date. While still good to do regardless, I'd argue the majority of the stolen SSNs used these days are used to create synthetic identities then sold off to others for <insert crime or clean citizen record here>. Not used to take out mass loans in your name or drain your accounts, but to establish a fake identity that still gets past the automated checks at least at first.

I'd say focusing on your SSA file, IRS file, and everify file make the most sense. On top of placing a lock at utility and bank verification platforms such as NCTUE and chexsystems. Ironically I would also say to opt out of lexisnexis too, but I believe the single sign on services government agencies are pushing for these days, relies on this service for validation if I recall correctly.
