Lake house, one hour from our primary. 4 young kids. Have had it since 2016. We love it, and we don't mind the upkeep.
The key for us is the proximity to our primary. Any further away and it would feel like a chore going there. We spent 75% of this summer at the lake. Made a million memories with friends, family, and neighbors that you couldn't put a price on.
ETA: We have neighbors that bought a lake place as an 'investment', and rent it out quite often. It's a lot of upkeep and work for them as part-time landlords. We have no interest in that.
