Personal Finance (Not Investing) • How Much of a Paycut Would You Take To Shorten Commute?

Oh, I'm going to take the new job. When I started this thread I had no idea I'd wind up with something that close.

Basically, I'm going to give up 6k to be 5 minutes from home. I can eventually take my kids to school with me when the time comes and in the meantime it's saving me an hour in the morning and evening. Yesterday took me an hour and ten to get home and today an hour and 15. New school has just one traffic light to worry about!

The actual difference in the schools other than commute...I currently teach at a large school. Roughly 875 kids. We have 2 full time P.E. teachers and another that comes for 3 days a week. We almost always have double classes in the gym and some years we've had a few instances where there are triples. Right now, I have great coworkers, but they are most likely also in transition and will be leaving, so if I stayed I'd have to roll the dice with new people. My school is so big the teachers are asked to do an AM and a PM duty now (used to be just one or other). I'm on car rider duty and the line is over 100 cars long. Duty actually lasts past contract time.

New school is about 350 kids. I will be the only P.E. teacher. Don't have to worry about getting someone who is hard to get along with although I may miss the social aspect of having someone you're really good friends with. One duty in AM or PM. They don't even have a car rider loop, so that duty isn't even a thing. Gym is small. That's main downside, but I can go outside. Other part is the Principal really made it clear that he wanted to get me there, which is definitely nice.

Ultimately, this just does too much positive for my family and my overall life-flow to simplify my work so much. When I started this thread I expected I'd be deciding between my school and some place maybe 22 minutes away or something....not that I'd land almost the closest school I could possibly get to my house. Funny thing is a friend I graduated college with is at the closest school...so we could share equipment if need be!

Thank you for all the feedback. It encouraged me to really pound the pavement in terms of searching for a place with an opening.
How has this decision turned out?
