As a trial lawyer in litigation, my best tips would be:
1. Assets go into trust or to the non-involved spouse (or parents)
2. Have insurance
3. Next best way to avoid being sued in relation to a negligent act or omission is to take preventative steps and prove them with a contemporaneous paper trail.
4. Best way to avoid being sued or prosecuted for an intentional or reckless act or omission is to use the principle of diffusion of responsibility. This is why I have an accountant, for example. Not because I find it that hard to do my own tax return. But because any errors - unintentional or otherwise - that creep into my tax return can be explained by a miscommunication between my accountant and me. Having the interposed party makes it harder for anyone to prove intention or recklessness. Having automated systems in place also allows responsibility to be diffused onto the system instead of any individual operator. With things like taxes, you want as much as you can automated or devolved to your accountant, so that your personal culpability is never tested.
