I agree with the title of this topic in all its words. This was a gross, blatant error.I would not call this Egregious... Tax-preparers often miss these things... It's on the tax payer to know the laws and ensure they are being abided by. He needs a more full service accountant who knows their stuff and probably costs a lot more..
He'll need go back and amend the past 3 years of taxes and likely pay a penalty..
When I bring my car to my mechanic I'm relying upon his professional knowledge to do things properly. I'm trusting him. There is no way I'd be able to determine if the work had not been properly unless.
