Don't overthink this. And forget getting currency before you go, it's not 1985. 99.99% of of the time, the best solution is to simply use your ATM card (ideally one that reimburses ATM fees) at a foreign ATM. You already know to avoid Euronet and the like. The only other thing to keep in mind is to ALWAYS decline to be charged in your home currency (dollars), and choose to be debited in the local currency.
