Personal Consumer Issues • Just to double check. Is there a reason not to use a 35 year old olive oil can?

Good morning,

My uncle kept an old tin can of Spanish olive oil that belonged to my grandfather. We just opened it and I did not find any strange smell, I tried a drop and I am not blind :) . It contains little bits of olives, but just a fifth of tablespoon on around a cup of oil.

The can was kept all these years in a dry and cold environment. A raw estimation is that it is, at least, 35 years old.

I just wonder if there is a major reason to dispose it. The only strange thing that happened is that, when rubbing the inner surface of the can with a piece of bread, the rubbed oil was blackish, as if I had cleaned something dirty.

I must say the taste is quite different to the olive oil I am used to. There is a kind of sweetness that makes it interesting.

I planned to use it but, before killing my family, I preferred to double check and ask for your opinion. I would hate to waste something my grandfather/uncle kept this long.

Thank you

How about repurpose as a lubricant or furniture polisher, leather conditioner, massage oil, moisturizer, etc?
Here's a google search on "repurposing expired olive oil":
