Sometimes an out of state bond from a state without an income tax can pay the same, after.taxes, as an in-state bond. You may want to check your after tax yield before concluding that it makes sense to sell them.I plan to keep the GINNIEMAEs and will sell the municipal bonds from the other states. I will verify with the broker whether the remaining municipal bonds are of good quality. As for the selling of the out-of-state municipal bonds, I will use the broker.
You can take a significant haircut selling small quantities of individual munis. Don't automatically rule out keeping the out of state or mediocre in-state bonds. What ratings and how long until they mature?
