I FIRE'd during the pandemic... much earlier than I thought I would after getting furloughed first than laid off. I had no intentions of retiring and thought I would rejoin the work force, but the more I read about FIRE during the pandemic the more I realized I could make it happen. For the first couple years I had severance, cashed out max vacation, and unemployment benefits that kept me going. After that I came up with a strict budget and realized I needed a lot less money than while I was working. I transitioned to mainly cooking at home, I found out about public library with all the free audio books, I stopped paying for gym membership (partly because of Covid) and just did workouts at home with youtube or walk around my neighborhood, and I subsidize my vacation with miles and points. With both interest rates and stock market being up the last few years its eased my mind quite a bit and I have more than what I started out with.
