11 Temple (Philly)
10 Minnesota
9 Toronto Metropolitan (Ryerson)
8 Arizona State (Tempe)
7 Northeastern (Boston)
6 Washington (Seattle)
5 California (Berkeley)
4 Quebec (Montreal)
3 Columbia (NY)
2 Toronto
1 NYU
He included only cities with rail transit, which automatically excluded my Michigan (Ann Arbor) where I happily lived without a car for seven years in the late '70s to early '80s, bicycling a lot in addition to walking and occasionally the local bus system.
Chicago universities such as Northwestern, DePaul, Loyola and others are in the urban core, and are on heavy rail public transit. Some DC-area schools also would qualify.
