oh man,,,now you have me worried about how I'll fair as I play more and more (winter coming up and 2 new indoor clubs opened near me). Thanks, I’ve been playing for 2.5 years, out for 6 months with strained Achilles, another 6 with hamstring and now this. Over the same time period zero tennis injuries. Actually, I’ve been playing competitive tennis for over 60 years with zero injuries. I also used to teach tennis as a side job, which meant feeding lots of balls, never had a problem.
gips, give it more time. I started about 2-3 months ago (still play old man hockey, former tennis and r-ball player decades ago). It is still taking my body time to adjust to the new stresses, I'm 62 in decent shape. Some feet, knee, neck and shoulder pain, lessening now. If you're player singles, that's a rough way to start, I find doubles is much more common and a better way to ease into it.
I’d like to play tennis into my 80s, starting to think pickleball might not be appropriate for someone with that goal.
I have been accused of trying to make pickleball a game of 'mini tennis'. I guess that's common, but it's really what I want! Now I'd tell you to stick with tennis! life's too short to deal with those long injury delays if you can avoid it!
I actually started playing hockey in my mid-30s, because too much racquetball was causing foot pain requiring surgery to fix, I avoided that by moving to a sport with a nice solid boot, and never had much foot pain again! And yes, it's 2024, you can certainly play tennis into your 80s! I skate with some guys in their 70s now, and no plans to stop!!
