Personal Consumer Issues • Looking to install a home EV chargier in Europe (Greece). Have 3-phase 400V capability at panel.

I’m in central Italy, own a fully-electric car and installed a Wallbox (brand is JoinOn from Gewiss, a Northern Italian company). I have only positive experiences with it. It works reliably, it’s simple, there are 3 settings for charging speed. The only hiccup to date is I was not aware it has its own internal circuit breaker. After a thunderstorm, it stopped working yet my panel didn’t show any popped breakers. I thought it was fried, but instead it had protected itself without messing with the house breakers. Went to the panel, turned the breaker off, counted to 10, turned it back on. Worked like a champ.

We also have 3-phase power to the house and we have solar panels that cover about half our household usage. The remainder is served by the electric company with a contract for 15 kWh concurrent usage. That is more than double what the normal Italian contracts for, but we have 3 apartments and lots of electrical appliances. We heat and cool via heat pumps. No gas except the small backup hot water heater that augments the solar hot water heater as needed.

I think you will have a successful experiment given your situation. And I love my electric car. Good luck.

Edit: before I bought my electric car, I had a one-year rental of a hybrid Jeep. That one I just plugged into a regular house outlet (220V) as it could only hold a small charge for the 50 km hybrid range. It still took up to 4 hours for that small need. So definitely go for a wallbox if you have a fully electric car or you won’t be getting very far.
