Have you tried calling the IRS at 800-829-1040? (Budget the amount of time you're willing to wait on hold, get coffee and something to read, and give up when you hit your time limit). I haven't tried since the pandemic, but before it the wait times were actually not too bad. The first person I got was a sort of triage nurse who would then connect me to a second representative, but the second wait was usually short. Worth a shot, not a waste of time. Not as good as L. L. Bean but way better than Intuit.
I have found that they are very good at knowing what's in all the IRS publications. They never gave me a straight yes-or-no answer but very often would say "That's covered in publication #1234, see page 56" and read me the relevant bits, which always amounted to an answer.
