Just my 2 cents, but I love my SMA with Fidelity. It has performed on par with the S&P500 but the accumulated losses have more than made up for the management fee of 0.4%. You can always use short term losses against long term gains (not as advantageous but available). It’s kind of fun watching the trading in and out of positions on a monthly basis and it keeps me fully invested in up and down cycles (with the option to plow more funds in when the market sells off).
The complexities at tax time are a myth. Costs me nothing extra thru my CPA and because all positions are covered, my CPA just summarizes the 1099 sent to the IRS, not listing every trade. The IRS doesn’t care as long as the covered gains and losses, in sum, are totaled correctly.
Bottom line is…I love the product. I’m pretty much an s&p500 tracker with just about all of my assets so this gets me that performance with the added benefit of tax loss harvesting to the tune of double what I pay in management fees.
If I ever decide to get out, yes, it’ll take a couple of hours to sell everything off but big deal.
