You must get the compensation when you start. There's no other strategy that works 100% of the time.
I’m not particularly interested in the 6 month thing. I understand that’s puffery. I’m more trying to figure out how to navigate this supposed no raises ever given thing. To me it makes more sense to try to just get COLA. This would be less stressful than feeling the need to job hop every few years which is what she has been doing.
One strategy could be to job hop once more in the future and account for the lack of pay increases when negotiating for that first salary. Add 3 - 5 years of 2-3% pay increases into her desired initial salary, or whatever annual pay increase the both of you are going for. This way, if there are no increases, both of you have already compensated for it in that initial starting salary.
