Personal Consumer Issues • Why has the price of hotel rooms outpaced inflation?

I can think of two reasons, both related to the pandemic and accompanying lockdowns. First, people were left itching to travel when the restrictions were finally lifted, thus increasing demand. Second, the hotels needed to recoup their losses.
A lot of those people left itching to travel are baby boomers who have decided that it’s time to loosen the purse strings. We just flew round trip to London in business class, for the first time paid in cash (ie, not points or employer). We also stayed at a more expensive hotel than we would have a few years ago, upper 3 digits per night, and ate lovely meals that were not cheap.

We could afford this years ago, but didn’t.
Same here.

Pandemic + lockdowns left us feeling like we'd better see the world while we still can. Been to Europe twice since it ended but still haven't splurged for business class. Planning to go again this year.

Judging from the crowds we've run into I'd say it isn't just boomers that are feeling that way.
