Good question! I'm in my 60s and I decided to keep a rough estimate of how much we spend annually about 7 years ago in a pretty organized way. I wanted to see how many of those "large one-time expenses" we encountered.
In the end, it was comical. Every single year had a large one-time expense (at least one). Car, roof, HVAC, landscaping, pool, retaining wall, health expense, and the list just went on and on. The only thing that was pretty surprising was that after factoring in the "one-time expenses," the average annual expense amounts evened out for the most part.
Ultimately, I found it was most useful (at least for me) to take a look at many years and see if there were trends, and average the years together. I'm not sure you'll ever stop having those "one-time expenses" although you can attempt to even things out if that helps you.
