Personal Consumer Issues • question/advice re new car purchase

Edmunds suggests a fair retail price of around $23,973 for 2025 Corolla Hybrid SE. Try to be under that for the sales price.

As far as "out the door" cost - obviously you can't negotiate state-imposed tax and license fees, and destination fee is probably unavoidable -- but push back hard on anything else like "documentation fees", "dealer prep fees" etc. If they say they are "mandatory" tell them that's fine -- but sales price must be reduced by a like amount to cover the fee. Refuse all optional dealer add-ons and either demand them for free, or have them removed.

Dealers operate on a quota system. It is better to negotiate the last week of the month than the first.

The sale of your current car is an independent transaction from the purchase of a new one. Leave that until last, after you have already agreed on a purchase price. If your current car runs and drives, it has value. Easiest to just hand the keys over to the dealer if they are reasonable and its not worth a lot - but you can always sell on Craigs list for $300.
