Warning. Geometric vs Arithmetic average returns
Just to amplify this statement for the OP (and other readers), the reason the median (geometric mean) and average are not the same is because the distribution of the accumulated balance is log-normal rather than normal, so it's not symmetrical (see the image below as a generic example).

Stock returns in a single year look fairly Gaussian (normal), but the accumulated balance becomes more and more skewed (log-normal) as the accumulation period grows beyond 1 year.
