With due respect to all the reasonable and helpful explanations, it remains that for the individual investor at a moment in time the available mechanisms to choose to give up equity position for money are to hope to take a dividends or to hope for a helpful market response to an offer to sell a share. You can call that anything you want, but there is a lot of hope in there.
