Bumping this old thread because I currently need to replace my bedroom windows. The first guy who gave me an estimate employed the high pressure sales tactics mentioned above.. . .
We met with sales reps for two companies that advertise on radio and TV. Mistake. Their high pressure sales pitches that lasted well over 2 hours. We felt trapped in our own home! The one we let stay long enough to FINALLY get his number out quoted $88,000 for 17 windows and a door, reduced to the mid-$70,000 range using the "national" sales promotion and then in the mid-$60,000 range if we used the "local" sales promotion which, by the way, was only available if we said "yes" while he was there. It was like that scene in the movie Casablanca where a merchant keeps lowering the price for some fine scarves or something with the lowest price being "for special friends of Rick." We said, "No."
Luckily, we stumbled upon houstonwindowexperts.com. It's proprietor has done a public service by sharing his knowledge, via YouTube videos, of the window replacement "industry" (his term) and windows themselves. For people not in the Houston area, he offers to recommend window companies where they live.
. . .
After that, I found this thread and want to say thank you!! for the recommendation to check out houstonwindowexperts.com. The guy really likes to talk about windows, so there are a gazillion videos. However, the following video on questions to ask the salesperson was immensely helpful: https://youtu.be/2zgsWOufP2I
I had estimates from 3 different companies after I watched the videos, and I feel like I was really able to get a decent understanding of what each company had to offer because I knew what I should be looking for. I live in a third-floor condo, so quality of the installation is just as important as the quality of the window.
I've decided to go with Pella, and ironically the Pella estimate was actually $700 lower than the "this is our final price, once I walk out the door, it's history, you will never get a better offer" BS I got from the first guy.
