I learned at 22 by taking a few lessons. And took lessons later on too when I had been away from the slopes a few years.

Don't just wing it. That's a recipe for failure.
+1.

What’s cheaper: a few ski lessons or a medical bill?

Research to find good prices for lift tickets, lessons and the rentals. Go for full-day group lessons to save money. Usually the places with full day 4-6 hour programs for kids have good teachers.

For yourself, probably just a couple private lessons should be sufficient.

Equipment: balaclava, warm mittens (not gloves), a box of hand warmers (if it’s very cold), a warm jacket, sweatshirt, snow pants, sweat pants, and ski goggles. Plus helmet, ski poles, skis, and ski boots which you can usually rent in a package deal.
