I helped a loved one recently who bought a windows laptop and I tried all of the then current recommendations (no internet, audit mode, etc) to no avail. It wouldn’t let me initialize the machine without a Microsoft account. So I made up an email address, password, security codes, etc then immediately made a local admin account and deleted the online account.
Onto my beef:
Why buy or use a product from a company that is hostile towards its customers? Most non Mac laptops and desktops come pre installed windows, I get that, so I go out of my way to build my own or buy something with no OS.
Everything should be local first. This requirement of an online account to initialize your computer is utterly insane and is very sad that society has accepted it rather than fight it (with their wallets).
Use Linux. Free. Local first.
Use libre office. Free. Local first. Use this even if you do use windows. There is only extreme edge cases where one actually needs Word or Excel.
Stop supporting terrible companies. Don’t buy a computer or laptop that comes with Windows.
Don’t buy or use software that is only available for Windows.
If people would stop rolling over and taking it on the chin then Microsoft wouldn’t treat its customers the way that it does.
They do weld a lot of power and it is very entrenched but we can get out of this terrible relationship one person at a time! Join me!!
