We've typically paid something like 1/3 up front, in part to cover materials that are specially ordered.
Then another third at the approx halfway point, and the final third upon completion, including all inspections.
And that final third has never been something like the contractor has their hand out as they complete the final <whatever> on the last day. There's a bill, and we also get the inspection report. (Not all jobs require inspections.)
I'm guessing that is reasonably common in this area, but don't know for sure.
