Personal Consumer Issues • WhatsApp - messaging platform

WhatsApp is a messenger app similar to signal and telegram. The service got really popular mostly outside of the USA. My mom is a heavy user of the app despite being tech phobic because most of her sibling in Asia has an account.

At some point, the app was purchased by Meta and was eventually integrated with Facebook. A huge backlash occurred because no one trusts Meta.

Unlike telegram, messages are encrypted end to end and meta claims it cannot read your messages, so it depends if you believe them. Even if they don’t read your messages, they will collect your metadata. Meta might not know what you chatted or talked but they will know who you talked to and their Facebook profile, whether they are on your contact list, how often, how long, and ip address. A service like signal is more private because it collect less
Metadata.

Outside of the US whatsapp is used for customer service and micropayments.

The app is tied to your phone but you can link tablet and desktop computer.
