You write you are putting 2k a year into a car worth 10k.
I would submit a better way to look at this is, what is your cost per month of the vehicle? That's going to be some depreciation and your out of pocket costs.
Your depreciation is pretty small I would imagine at this point, it's pretty much depreciated.. 2k/12 months is $166 dollars.
If you don't mind driving the car (and dealing with the repairs), $166/month is dirt cheap.
Part of me worries that the $2k/12 is going to escalate, but my mechanic says it's in good shape otherwise so maybe it's worth sitting tight after all.
At least for Japanese cars, the OEM parts are almost always superior. Your car starts to go downhill quickly once you start putting in aftermarket junk.
$2k/year is way less than a new car payment.
