It's because of a physician shortage, so they restrict access to one team of physicians to patients with insurance issued by their own insurance foundation (medigap plan G, Advantage, group, or individual policies). This is a large health care system in our area. It is a difference between primary care appt. lead times of about 7 months vs. 2-3 months at their clinics. I prefer that model to the concierge model being used to address similar issues in some other areas. With that model, one may pay $4K/year on top of Medicare/Medigap premiums for preferred access.
