As an ex-pat kiwi, i would say it's better to stay in Australia and explore around there and avoid a 3+ hour flight (plus all the airport drama).
NZ is likely to be colder and wetter than Sydney at that time. If you want warmer weather, then fly/drive north of Sydney.
With only 1 week to spare, personally i would stay in the Sydney area or go down to Melbourne depending on how much travel you want to do (or Adelaide if you're into wine).
