I'm a novice at recording, so this thread is very interesting and helpful.
.. $200 per pair JBL LSR 305s [monitors] are a really great choice. ..
The .. hard .. choices are microphones. .. Shures can be fine, but .. there are .. better choices. ..
get a decent interface, the monitors above and just start ..
Focusrite, Motu, Audient, and Topping all make good two mic interfaces for not a ton of money.
Reaper is a good DAW for free to try and cheap to buy. ..
.. I .. decided to get a Mac and use it only for music. ..
.. most important factor was to have a computer for music use only, and to get a backup drive for your work. ..
My first interface is a Focusrite. I still have it and it works never a problem. ..
Try GarageBand (Mac) or Mixcraft (PC); both are well known for being very use friendly.
I did get a Mac that I only use for audio recording. [Actually my kids bought it for me as an Xmas gift.]
I bought a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface.
I use GarageBand, which came free with the Mac.
I use Shure SM-58 mics [that I already had].
I bought Audio Technica ATH-MX50x headphones.

A sales rep at Sweetwater [and some people that I play with] helped me pick the gear.
My biggest impediment so far is unfamiliarity with Apple computers.
