Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Charitable Donations -- What counts and what doesn't?

I use tax software, H&R Block. I drop off things at a thrift store and they give me a receipt each time. I use a spreadsheet to track the items given. The tax software asks for the date of drop off and I just use the same date for everything. It wants to make sure you are within the same year as taxes. My software will calculate the price of most items and I guess at the rest (low ball price). I also use a spreadsheet to track monetary donations. I donate online so I always get a receipt. You have to prove you gave the donation if you get audited and you can't without a receipt. I donate food sometimes to my church for a local homeless shelter but I do not take a donation on that. I might be able to but I've never looked into it. I also donate food to a local charity using Amazon but again I don't try to write it off. I don't know the rules for food and I have lots of other donations so it doesn't matter to me. I really should make sure you can itemize on taxes. I can every year but only 10% of people can itemize since 2017 tax law.
